CHAPTER SIX

DARZEED

Valerie will dance with me tonight. I’ve decided that much. She will not refuse me, because as she’s said, it’s rude to refuse a dance. Finding her in the simulator the other day cleared up everything. Even if she doesn’t like me, there is an undeniable attraction between us. We are biologically compatible.

And of any human in this outpost, she is the only viable mate for me.

I spot her in the crush almost immediately. We’ve had so many balls at this point, that everyone feels comfortable laughing and flirting and dancing and drinking. It is all thanks to the hard work of Valerie, Ellen, and Ruby. Truly, Valerie’s memories and details are evidence of her fine mind.

“Lady Valerie, will you dance with me?”

She’s exquisite in the dark blue ballgown. Now that I’ve come to terms with the sensations I’ve had for weeks now, it is much easier to think in her presence. I’m no longer fighting myself. Humans have all these curves, and Valerie, especially so.

“Ah, Mr. Darcy, you’re finally asking me to dance.” She rolls her eyes.

“Darzeed,” I correct. She is being rude again, pushing me away. She knows my name by now.

“I thought there was no one in this outpost you could deign to dance with.”

“I was wrong,” I say.

The phrase seems to shock her, and her hand falls into mine. She is wearing gloves that are soft and silky, but I can still feel how small her hands are within mine. I lead her to the dance floor. While I have been, as she has said, “unquestionably rude,” I have also been paying attention to the courtship practices being taught. And borrowing the simulator to practice the dances—especially in the last few nights. The steps are easy enough once you learn them.

But what all the practice with the simulators couldn’t teach me was how it feels. My fingers tingle, both the one holding her hand and the one holding her at the small of her back. The position forces her closer to me than she’s ever been before, and I can sense that it affects her just as it affects me. She won’t look at me, but she doesn’t have to. The music fills my head like a drug, and I spin her around, pulling her close.

In all the simulators, there was talking during the dances. But words fail me now. Words always seem to fail me around her.

“You’re quiet,” I finally say.

She jumps at the sound of my voice, like she forgot words were a possibility.

“I am confused.”

“What about?” I ask. She speaks so much, but now she is quiet. Everything is topsy-turvy.

“You’re being nice.”

“I am always nice,” I say.

That gets a laugh out of her, at least. I can be charming. Absolutely.

“Why the change?”

I don’t know how to say it. I’m worried I’ll scare her off. She’s so complex, so fascinating. So difficult to understand. Ruby is clear and open in her adoration of Bingzh.

“Perhaps I was sick of being rude while everyone else is having fun,” I say.
